Five representatives from the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara and the Catholic Church of the Beatitudes drove in two cars packed with with nine suitcases over the border from Calexico to Mexicali. The suitcases were filled with art supplies and books for the approximately 80 to 100 children living in the Posada del Migrante Shelter. The youth groups from Trinity Episcopal Church and the Unitarian Society had raised more than $1,500 to purchase art supplies for the children, and donated Spanish-language books were brought along to jumpstart a children's library. Thanks to a donor and friend of Seven Seas Press, a member of the Unitarian Society, our bilingual books were included in this mission.
Those who live at the Posada come from Central America or from Michoacán, Mexico. Their average age is 35. They have suffered from violence, discrimination, natural disasters, and poverty and have traveled hundreds of miles only to be turned away by US authorities, leaving them to live for months, or years, in limbo.
We are so grateful to our donor for including our bilingual children's books in the care package.
